The sciatic nerve is the nerve that goes from the spine all the way down to the legs. It is the longest nerve in the human body.
All the types of pain caused by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve are called sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain, numbness and trembling in the feet, legs and buttocks. Usually it affects one side of the lower body.
Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve caused by prolapsed disk in the spine. Sitting for longer period of time or bad sitting habits can also cause sciatica. Also it can be caused by stress, tumor or heavy lifting. Pregnant women often suffer from this condition.
The pain can be relieved by doing some very effective stretches like pigeon pose, seated hip stretch, piriformis stretch and point therapy with tennis ball or foam roller. These stretches are very effective at elevating the pain and can be done at home.
Another way to ease the pain is to lie down on the back, put the head on a pillow and pull the legs to the chest. Stay in this position for 10 minutes.
Essential oils are also very effective for relief of sciatica pain.
